About Us...
The aim of the Supporting Rural Independent Living Project is to help older people to stay in their own homes for longer, reduce hospital admissions as well overcome loneliness and isolation.
The project has established 3 rural hubs within Woolsery, Halwill and Winkleigh to act as a focal point for community action, recruiting and training volunteers as well as providing practical help and support for older people. We also have started a new rural hub in Holsworthy. Volunteers have been recruited and trained to provide practical support in the home and assist older people to take an active part in community life by developing new activities and social clubs. |
Our training programs for volunteers are providing the right balance of knowledge and information enabling volunteers to support older people living in isolated rural communities. The program has prepared Volunteers for their support role, challenge views and beliefs, informed and raise awareness of key issues and enable then to have a better understanding of the role and purpose of existing health and social care services.
The creation of a bank of well trained and supported volunteers in isolated rural communities will demonstrate that issues affecting older people can be addressed at minimal cost, improve health and wellbeing and provide a model for wider community action.
The project will particularly focus on the needs of older people living with depression, dementia and isolation.
